Listening to our communities

My team and I have spent a busy and rewarding summer visiting communities across Gwent to support community-driven events and activities. Since June, we have visited each of Gwent’s five counties, attending more than 20 local events and speaking to thousands of residents about the issues that concern them.

Residents have shared their views on policing in their communities and on issues including the police budget and online harms. We were also able to direct people to key partners and support services, with a particular focus on domestic abuse and violence against women and girls. The conversations we have with residents at these events ensure we hear directly from people of all ages and backgrounds, helping local voices continue to shape the work we do.

I am also pleased to have been able to offer funding to community groups to put on some fantastic family-friendly events and activities. It has been a real pleasure to see the difference they have made to local people, bringing neighbours together, creating positive opportunities and helping communities feel safer and more connected.

My Community Engagement Fund gives local groups, charities, social enterprises and other organisations the opportunity to apply for up to £5,000 to support their projects and events. Our communities have the power to create lasting change, and they are best placed to lead it. With the right support, local groups can make a real difference. That is why I am proud to invest in that potential and use money recovered from criminal activity to help build a fairer, safer society.
