Equality Analysis

Equality analysis is the method used by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) to demonstrate that it is giving due regard to equality when developing and implementing changes to strategy, policy and practice. It replaces the previous equality impact assessment process. It also provides for having due regard to the aims of the general duty when making decisions and when setting policies.

The purpose of equality analysis is twofold:

To identify unintended consequences and mitigate them as far as possible, and
To actively consider how to change to a policy might support the advancement of equality and fostering of good relations.

Changes being proposed through policy, or decisions made by the Commissioner need to be analysed from an equality perspective and the results considered before those decisions are made. Where negative impacts are identified, consideration needs to be given to mitigating those impacts.

The findings of analysis are documented and brought to the attention of the Commissioner to be taken into account before making decisions.
