Supporting young refugees

14th October 2022

I was pleased to be invited to present certificates to a group of young refugees who have completed a series of workshops with Gwent Police.

The young people, aged between 16 – 18, have completed a five-week course that introduces them to the police, explains the laws here in the UK, and gives them information that will help to keep them safe.

Newport is home to about one third of Wales’s unaccompanied refugees and asylum seekers, who can be vulnerable to exploitation from criminal gangs due to lack of language, and cultural understanding.

These workshops are helping to keep them safe and enabling them to play an active part in their community.
