Celebrating South Asian Heritage month
This week my team took part in a cookery workshop to celebrate South Asian Heritage month.
Officers from Gwent Police, Major Pete Harrison, and Jessica Dunrod of the National Museum of Wales joined Rakhel Smith, a local resident of Newport, of Pakistani origin for an interactive workshop to understand more about the South Asian culture.
Participants rolled up their sleeves for a cookery masterclass, where they made South Asian starters under the watchful eye of Rakhel.
Later the group took part in a quiz which tested their knowledge of South Asian curries, and later gathered for a meal where Rakhel answered questions from participants.
Listening, understanding, and learning from all of our communities is at the heart of effective community cohesion.
I hope more sessions are planned in the future, to help break down barriers and build trust between Gwent Police and our diverse communities.
