White Ribbon Day 2023
White Ribbon is the UK’s leading charity engaging men and boys to end violence against women and girls. White Ribbon Day is an annual event which is held to coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. This year it takes place on Saturday 25 November.
The theme for White Ribbon Day 2023 is #ChangeTheStory. #ChangeTheStory is about reversing the narrative that women and girls are responsible for threats to their own safety.
Most violence against women is perpetrated by men. Women and girls live with a fear of violence from men that men do not experience in the same way.
For example:
• One in four girls in mixed-sex schools have had experiences of unwanted sexual touching in school.
• Six in 10 women have felt harassed in the gym by a man.
• 1.7 million women experienced domestic abuse in the year ending March 2022.
The #ChangeTheStory campaign calls on men and boys to call out problematic behaviour and challenge harmful attitudes. It encourages them to be an ally of women and girls and help to drive a culture change in society.
Details on how you can take part in White Ribbon Day, either as an individual, school or business, are available on the White Ribbon website.
In the run up to White Ribbon Day the Suzy Lamplugh Trust is running a series of online training events titled Stand Up Against Street Harassment. The sessions are free to attend and aim to drive awareness of harassment, upskilling and empowering individuals across various settings such as schools, public transport, festivals, public spaces, and workplaces, to help defuse situations, discourage harassers, and support victims.
