STOP – TALK – PROTECT
The Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent, Jeff Cuthbert and Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner, Eleri Thomas are delighted to support Gwent Police campaign to warn parents about the dangers that lurk online.
The message to parents and carers is simple, stop what you are doing; talk to your children about staying safe online; and protect them from harm.
It comes following an increase in the number of reports of children sharing indecent images online.
Throughout the Coronavirus pandemic, going online has become a way of life. It’s where we all learn, work and socialise. For children, going online is the new classroom, playground or play date. Sadly, there are people out there that take advantage of this and pray on the young.
Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Ms Eleri Thomas MBE said:
“Protecting children and young people from harm is a priority for Police and Crime Commissioner and Gwent Police. As part of my role, I am aware of increasing evidence that children and young people are subject to online harm and exploitation.
“Crime is ever evolving and this type of cyber - crime has a significant impact on individuals, families and communities.
“I am pleased that we are working with local partners including education leads and youth organisations to raise awareness of the dangers our future generations face online. Please if you are a parent, carer or support children and young people remember these three words: stop, talk, protect.
“It’s really important to support children and young people. They need to be aware of the dangers and always be encouraged to talk to someone they trust if they’re worried or concerned”
Gwent Police is committed to supporting the safeguarding and welfare needs of children. Officers and staff are trained to recognise the signs, respond quickly and investigate to help protect our communities.
Since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic there has been an increase in the number of reports to Gwent Police to young people sharing indecent images.
