Sexual abuse and sexual violence is not tolerated across Gwent

As part Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week, Gwent Police is sending a strong message to perpetrators of crime who prey on the vulnerable and blight communities.

Supported by police forces and partner originations across the country, the week provides an opportunity to highlight the work carried out to prevent this type of crime happening and showcase the support available for victims.

Chief Constable Pam Kelly said: “Victims are at the heart of everything we do here.

“Crime can have a devastating impact on victims. It is vital that victims receive the information and support they need to help cope and recover.

“Our victims’ hub, launched last year, provides victims with the right support.

The unit, made up of more than 15 victim care officers, acts as a central point throughout the entire criminal justice process.

The unit has already helped more than 4500 victims since its launch, by providing appropriate support that reflects each victim’s individual needs.

Victims of sexual violence receive dedicated support from specialist officers who are able to best understand the impact this type of crime can have on a person.

Chief Constable Pam Kelly continued: “A big part of keeping the communities of Gwent safe is preventing crime happening in the first place.

“We’ve recently received more than £673,000 of Home Office additional funding to tackle violence against women and girls.

“This funding is already making a difference and making people feel more safe in public spaces.”

As part of the funding, Gwent Police has developed a “Safe Space” accreditation scheme which encourages local businesses to provide a safe space for women and girls.

Through training, local businesses will understand unacceptable attitudes and behaviours towards women and girls, and know their role to help those in need.

Businesses across Gwent will be able to provide first-hand support for any women or girls who feel unsafe and need help.

“We know that abuse can have life-changing consequences for the people who experience it and their loved ones. By working together, we can provide victims with the help and specialist support you need to end the abuse and ensure it doesn’t happen again.

Both the Chief Constable and I have a firm commitment that Gwent Police will continue to work hard to tackle violence against women, domestic abuse and sexual violence. I want to reassure people that if you have been a victim of these appalling crimes then help is available. Please don’t suffer in silence. Speak out. Report it.”
