Quarterly crime figures released by Office for National Statistics
The Office for National Statistics has released its quarterly figures for recorded crime in England and Wales.
Statistics show that recorded crime in Gwent fell by three per cent compared to June 2023.
The figures also show that shoplifting incidents have risen across the country compared to the same period last year.
Police and Crime Commissioner Jane Mudd said: “The recorded crime figures can be useful indicators of crime trends, however, they must be considered in the right context.
“They can reflect national awareness on issues, changes to recording practices, proactive policing initiatives, or that the public’s confidence to report certain crimes is increasing for example.
“The latest figures show that the level of recorded crime remains largely steady in Gwent and areas where we have seen noticeable rises, such as shoplifting, are consistent with forces across the country.
“The rise in shoplifting in the UK is a real concern and the abuse and violence that often accompanies these incidents can leave victims traumatised and destroy small businesses.
“I recently joined colleagues from across Wales for a round table event hosted by the Welsh Retail Consortium where we discussed different approaches to deter shoplifting and violence against shopworkers. I am confident that we are making some real progress here in Wales and this is something that will continue to be a priority for me throughout my time in office.
“We know that many crimes continue to go unreported, particularly things like fraud, domestic abuse and sexual violence. Help and support is available so please, if you have been a victim of crime, report it.”
