PCC commends UK Government’s commitment to tackling crime in communities
The Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent Jane Mudd has welcomed the UK Government’s commitment to tackling crime in communities and delivering a victim-centred criminal justice system.
The government’s commitments were set out in its Crime and Policing Bill, and Victim, Courts and Public Protection Bill, announced in the King’s Speech.
The Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent, Jane Mudd, said: “I am really pleased to see the UK Government committing to tackle the issues that I know, from my conversations on the doorstep and in communities, matter most to our residents.
“The government is taking action to increase the police’s powers to crack down on issues such as serious crime, anti-social behaviour, and violence against women and girls. It is also strengthening laws to protect our children and is committing to delivering a criminal justice system that puts the needs of the victims first and foremost.
“I am also particularly pleased to see a commitment to protecting shopworkers and tackling retail crime, both of which I highlighted in my manifesto prior to election. The rise in violence and abuse towards shopworkers in recent years is shocking, often leaving victims too traumatised to work and make a living, and these measures are badly needed.
“The commitments announced in the King’s Speech will help to make all of our communities safer places to live, work and visit. I look forward to working with the new UK Government, and the government here in Wales, closely to deliver on these commitments for our residents.”
