Newport Kerala Community visits police headquarters
Children and young people from Newport’s Kerala community have visited Gwent Police’s headquarters in Cwmbran for a behind the scenes look at policing.
The young people aged 11 – 17 were given a tour of the building and were shown around the force control room, which handles 999 and 101 calls. They were also introduced to officers from the roads policing unit and had the opportunity to meet some of Gwent’s police dogs.
Newport Kerala Community is an organisation which represents people from Kerala in India and aims to maintain the culture and traditions of the region while helping members to integrate with the wider Welsh community. The visit was arranged to build bridges with community members and the police, and to give the young people an insight into the career opportunities available within policing.
Police and Crime Commissioner Jane Mudd said: “We were delighted to support this event which was a fantastic opportunity to bring children and young people from the Kerala community into police headquarters and give them a taste of what goes on behind the scenes.
“I am keen to show our children and young people that no matter their race or religion, there is absolutely a place for them in policing, and that they can play their part and help us to make a real difference in our communities.”
