Have your say on police funding in Gwent
The Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent, Jane Mudd, is asking residents for their views on police funding for the next financial year.
Police and Crime Commissioners are responsible for setting the amount residents pay towards policing each month through their council tax. Almost 43 per cent of Gwent Police’s overall budget comes from local council tax.
To make this decision, the Commissioner must consider several factors:
- The amount of funding the Chief Constable says is needed to deliver an efficient and effective service
- The annual financial settlement from the UK Government
- Funding from the Welsh Government and the Ministry of Justice
- The affordability for local residents
Police and Crime Commissioner Jane Mudd said: “Residents have told me they want a more visible police presence. They want more done to protect the most vulnerable in society and to tackle the root causes of crime. To achieve this, as well as meet the ambitious goals set by the UK Government under its Safer Streets Mission and continue covering the costs of previous increases in police officers and PCSOs, we need investment.
“There is only one direct variable I can control in terms of funding, and that is the amount of council tax precept paid by local people. However, I also understand that many people in our communities are struggling financially.
“Before I make any decisions on Gwent Police’s budget for next year, I want to give you the opportunity to have your say, raise any concerns, or share your comments. I promise your feedback will be read, considered, and will influence my decision-making.
“Please take a few minutes to complete my survey and have your say.”
